Midway Boulevard Design

The Midway Boulevard Design project seeks to improve safety, comfort and mobility for people walking, biking, rolling and driving along Midway Boulevard. This project builds upon the vision developed for Midway Boulevard in 2022 after extensive community input. Project Overview

Midway Boulevard is a high-priority corridor for improving walking and bicycling safety, crossings and speed management. The Midway Boulevard Design project builds on the 2022 Midway Boulevard Multimodal Plan. The City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) developed the 2022 plan with extensive technical analysis and about 1,800 public comments. Federal funding is now available for design and right-of-way acquisition.

The project team will consider engineering and safety requirements, cost, maintenance, field conditions and community feedback when making design decisions. CCOB will coordinate with the Colorado Department of Transportation and other technical partners.

Phase Overview

The improvements to Midway Boulevard move through four phases:

• Study: In 2019, the Broomfield Bicycle and Pedestrian Assessment identified Midway Boulevard as a priority for walking and bicycling investment.
• Concept: From 2021-2022, CCOB studied conditions, evaluated alternatives and worked with the community to develop a vision for the corridor that improves safety and comfort. This is referred to as "the concept."
• Design (current phase): CCOB is refining the 2022 concept to determine what can be kept, adjusted or changed. This includes technical analysis of things like utilities, drainage, cost and more. The design will support construction plans and funding decisions.
• Construction (future): After design is complete and funding is secured, improvements may be built in phases. CCOB has not established a construction schedule.

What the Community Said

Community input helped shape the 2022 Midway Boulevard Multimodal Plan. From July 2021 through October 2022 CCOB collected feedback through in-person events, Broomfield Voice, online maps and surveys, virtual meetings and more. In total, about 1,800 comments were received. Consistent themes included:

• Safety and comfort for people walking and bicycling
• Intersection and crossing safety
• Speeding and speed management
• Traffic operations, access and turning movements

About 90% of respondents said Midway Boulevard needed minor to significant changes. The current design phase builds on that input and focuses on decisions and areas that still need to be refined. Review the previous planning process and community input on the archived Midway Multimodal Plan page.

Public Engagement

Community feedback will help refine the design in specific areas along the corridor. For example, where to locate a multi-use path and where crossings can be improved. Feedback will not replace technical, safety, funding or regulatory requirements. The project team will document, review and consider all input before finalizing the refined concept. The team will report back on what they heard and how input influenced the design.
