Energy and Sustainability Overview

The City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while improving the quality of life for residents. This page shares the journey, highlights projects and accomplishments, and invites you to help shape the next steps toward a cleaner, healthier and more resilient community.

Why it Matters

Buildings and transportation together are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. For example, buildings in the U.S. account for around 40% of energy consumption, and inefficient systems can waste a significant share of that energy.

Improving energy efficiency and expanding renewable energy helps to cut harmful GHG emissions, reduce air pollution, improve resiliency, support green jobs and improve indoor air quality for everyone.

Community GHG Reduction Goals

Broomfield’s City Council set ambitious targets to reduce community-wide emissions:

• 26% by 2025
• 50% by 2030
• 90% by 2050

Municipal buildings also have tailored targets: 30% by 2025, 60% by 2030, and 100% by 2050.

History and Background

Ambitious GHG reduction targets were first established in Resolution No. 2020-169, adopted by the Broomfield City Council on Sept. 22, 2020. Building on that foundation, CCOB launched its Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan in 2022, a strategic framework to chart a path toward a more sustainable future. The plan outlined high-level strategies to reduce emissions across energy, transportation and waste, and emphasizes community engagement in meaningful climate action.
