<p>Every five years, local public health departments do a Community Health Assessment to see what areas are going well for community health and what could be improved. Information is gathered from population data, community organization surveys and focus groups. This information guides the next five years of health programming and efforts. Because of your feedback from the last Community Health Assessment, behavioral health was identified as a community priority resulting in the <a href="https://www.broomfield.org/2627/Behavioral-Health-Improvement-Plan" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><u>Broomfield Behavioral Health Improvement Plan</u></a>. Submit your questions about the Community Health Assessment under the &quot;Questions&quot; tab below.</p><h2>Health Equity Approach</h2><p>Health equity is the ability for everyone to reach their full health potential, regardless of any socially determined status. Health equity in action involves removing barriers and providing resources for communities that have the least access to services and are most impacted by a health issue.</p><p>Broomfield Public Health and Environment (BPHE) is committed to promoting health equity in this process. Equity is not the same as equality. Information and feedback from certain Broomfield communities who have less access to health resources and more barriers to living well will be prioritized. We recognize that this concept can feel uncomfortable if you&#39;re new to it. Learn more about health equity in <a href="https://youtu.be/Arpzx6TJuQI?si=daJJNiietSo1mbEO" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><u>this video from the American Public Health Association</u></a>.</p><h2>Gathering Data and Feedback</h2><p>BPHE is taking a multi-faceted approach to gathering data and feedback. There are people whose voices and experiences are often left out of typical data collection efforts. You may have heard these communities referred to as &ldquo;hard-to-reach,&rdquo; &ldquo;historically underrepresented,&rdquo; or &ldquo;marginalized.&rdquo; BPHE will continue to uplift the voices in these communities to better understand the health issues that these individuals face. Take a look at the project timeline for more information, and come back often for additional feedback opportunities.</p><h2>Stay Up-to-Date</h2><p>This page is the best place to stay up-to-date on the Community Health Assessment project, and to review findings as they become available. A Universal Collection program would change the current residential waste collection system from many licensed haulers to a City and County of Broomfield managed contract consisting of a single hauler or a few haulers assigned to different parts of Broomfield.

<h2>Why is transportation important to sustainability in Broomfield?</h2><p>Transportation represents 42% of Broomfield&rsquo;s GHG emissions, and this pollution is expected to increase as our county reaches its projected 26% growth rate by 2027.</p><p>An integrated and well connected multimodal transportation system allows residents, employees, and visitors of Broomfield the freedom of personal mobility and choice of how to travel &mdash; whether it&rsquo;s walking, cycling, driving, carpooling, or riding public or private transportation. Increasingly, thriving cities have an extensive and expanding transportation network that includes integrated transit, biking, and walking facilities in addition to efficiently operated and maintained roads and trails.</p><p>To reduce its transportation emissions, Broomfield will focus on strategies that:</p><ul><li>Reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) per capita</li><li>Reduce single-occupant vehicle (SOV) travel</li><li>Promote and support electrification</li><li>Improve fuel-efficiency</li><li>Increase access to safe and affordable multimodal transportation and including shared use micro-mobility choices for all ages and abilities</li><li>Support a well connected multimodal network</li><li>Support transportation and land-use planning that promotes equitable and low carbon mobility.</li><li>Promote transit oriented supportive development</li></ul><p><br></p><h2>Where is Broomfield Right Now?</h2><ul><li>2 dual-port level I charging stations on municipal property</li><li>2016 Transportation Plan, which highlights the importance of emerging technologies (including EVs), alternative fuels, multimodal transportation including public transit, cycling, walking, and other carbon reduction strategies.</li><li>Support transit options such as Broomfield Easy Ride, the RTD Flexride, Free Fare Summer program, Flatiron Flyer Bus Rapid Transit service, and the Broomfield commuter program</li></ul><h2>How to Stay Involved</h2><p>Use this page to stay involved. Transportation & Sustainability

<h2>Why is waste management important to sustainability in Broomfield?</h2><p>For most people, &ldquo;throwing away&rdquo; a piece of trash seems like the end of the story, but a complex system of collection, distribution, reuse, and eventual disposal is only the beginning for a discarded item.</p><p>Each year, Broomfield produces more than 75,000 metric tons (MT) of solid waste and only 23% is diverted from landfills. This represents a significant environmental, public health and economic opportunity.</p><p>Landfill waste produces greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and impact our local air quality. Improperly disposed hazardous materials can threaten our water quality while representing an economic loss of valuable materials.</p><p>Today, we have opportunities for large-scale improvements in composting, commercial recycling, and changes in our construction and demolition waste management systems. By reducing the amount of waste we generate and maximizing the amount of materials diverted from landfills, we can conserve resources, create economic opportunities and improve the health of our community.</p><p><br></p><h2>Where are we Right Now?</h2><p>Broomfield has a long way to go to catch up with our neighboring communities along the Front Range. Fortunately this means there is ample opportunity to improve our diversion rate in the near term.</p><table class="noBorder" style="width: 100%;"><tbody><tr><td style="width: 49.9495%;"><p><strong>Zero Waste Project Update: Spring 2021</strong>. Broomfield is making progress! Quality data is the foundation of any performance-based project. Broomfield&#39;s original waste diversion estimate (based on limited sample data) was 12%. Zero Waste Associates, Broomfield&#39;s planning consultant, used primary data from the ReTRAC reporting system to perform an analysis that revealed Broomfield&#39;s waste diversion rate is actually 23%, on par with Denver&#39;s rate!</p><p>While no programs or policies have yet been proposed for implementation, this first and critical step puts Broomfield on a path to achieve the adopted waste diversion goals.</p><p>This spring and summer, Zero Waste Associates will be conducting further analysis as well as outreach and engagement within the community to develop policy recommendations to further advance the overall diversion rate and achieve zero waste by 2035!</p></td><td style="width: 49.9496%;"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-us-california/ce1d1784152eecbcbe3f94903e430ea379ad2252/original/1624299336/bf5328f07038424ec853de584fbb0039_ZW_Project_Update_5-17-2021-07.png?1624299336" style="width: 448px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></td></tr></tbody></table><p><br></p><h2>How to Stay Involved</h2><p>Use this page to stay involved.
