Be transported on the ARTery! Broomfield’s proposed creative corridor project is kicking off a pilot segment to design creative elements along trails throughout Broomfield.
Inspired by creative corridors found across the country, the ARTery aims to enhance the low-stress network of walk and bike paths with engaging art and culture experiences. Sections of these paths will be selected through multiple phases to be incorporated into the ARTery. These sections will be the new home of various types of cultural experiences, from pop-up to permanent. By discovering cultural experiences across the Broomfield, the ARTery will provide unexpected moments of wonder and curiosity - where you already are! The long-term, multi-year goal is to incorporate the ARTery into the complete low-stress walk and bike network throughout all five Broomfield wards to meet the following goals:
Curate public art experiences to provoke curiosity, inspire wonder and create engagement in unexpected places.
Enhance existing and future low-stress routes and trails throughout Broomfield.
Connect neighborhoods, celebrate creativity and augment healthy activities in outdoor spaces.
Cultivate a sense of one Broomfield.
Additionally, Broomfield is working on an active transportation wayfinding plan and design standards, another identified priority in the Assessment that will also be piloted along this corridor, see BroomfieldVoice.com/Wayfinding.
The ARTery is presented in collaboration across City and County departments, and is presented in tandem with the Creative Network.
Phase 1
The first phase will be a pilot segment connecting two hubs, The Field Open Space and Broomfield Commons Open Space, and includes proposed public art installations. This low-stress route provides paved trails for walking, running, and biking though beautiful parks, playgrounds, open space and neighborhoods. On the map below, green icons are existing public art, house icons show possible and prioritized locations for the public art pilot project described below and yellow icons are hubs that include a variety of places to visit and things to explore!
Public Art Pilot Projects
The first phase will be a pilot segment that will include proposed activities and public art installations. Both the ARTery and associated public art projects are part of a broader City Council initiative to support the creative economy in Broomfield through various initiatives. These pilot projects will inform and refine processes and build the groundwork for future expansion throughout the city and county in partnership with fellow city departments, the Arts, History and Cultural Council, and other community partners and stakeholders.
Sidewalk Murals and Stamps Project and Engagement
In partnership with the Arts, History and Cultural Council, the City and County of Broomfield is excited to launch the first-ever sidewalk mural project as part of the first phase of the ARTery! This project incorporates new priorities and goals to align with the new Art in Public Places Plan, developed by the Public Art Committee in 2021:
Select three pairs of artists, each pair composed of one professional and one emerging artist to create work together through mentorship.
Utilize a Request for Qualifications to select artists based on their commitment to community engagement and collaboration, and have the interactions with neighbors inspire their final artwork proposals.
Provide multiple opportunities for the Broomfield community to participate, including during the mural installation!
Want to participate in the mural project? Information on how to volunteer during the installation is coming soon, and in the meantime please join us at the following event to meet the artists:
Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Broomfield Library during CSU Extensions Seed Swap event to launch the new Seed Library! Semi-Finalist artists for the ARTery Sidewalk Mural and Stamp Project to hear from neighbors and visitors about what art means to them, and what words, colors and phrases come to mind when you think about Broomfield!
Little Houses Project
Inspired by free little libraries, these proposed installations will be titled the Little Houses Project. Each Little House will have a different theme and display items from artwork to history dioramas. As part of the first ARTery pilot, these Little Houses will provide engaging and rotating contents to surprise and delight residents and visitors.
