Broomfield Wildfire Mapping Update
How is Broomfield working to create a local wildfire map, and what is the current status?
Pilot Study & Vegetation Survey Completed: Broomfield hired Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting to conduct on-the-ground vegetation surveys ("ground truthing") in a pilot area to capture high-resolution local data instead of relying on generalized state-wide data.
Fire Behavior Analysis Complete: Following direction from the State that local jurisdictions must run independent modeling, staff completed the Broomfield Fire Behavior Analysis. The analysis demonstrates that irrigated residential zones carry low fire intensity, while targeted management (such as 30–50 ft mowed buffers in adjacent open space) effectively lowers hazard levels.
Citywide Mapping Phase Underway: Broomfield is expanding the scope of work to model and map remaining WUI areas across the community. This approach ensures a single, complete submission to the Colorado Wildfire Resilience Code Board (CWRCB) for local map approval.
Upcoming Community Engagement: Once the draft local map and technical report are completed, staff and consultants will host community and HOA meetings to walk residents through the proposed map before it goes to City Council and the CWRCB.
